Sea Kayaking Safety

Sea kayaking is a pleasurable sport enjoyed by many.
Like all sports there are risks and it is critical you are well prepared.
Safety is your responsibility and no one else's and you should always consider the following -

  1. Weather, is it going to be suitable.
  2. The trip is it within our capabilities, both in time and type of water conditions.
  3. Tides - always check these before venturing out, where applicable.
  4. Travel with a group where possible and let people know where you are going and when you plan to return.

Basic Equipment for all trips:

  • Sea kayak with sealed compartments front & rear.
  • Spray Skirt.
  • Bilge pump or bailer.
  • Suitable PFD or life jacket.
  • Waterproof jacket, thermals, sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+)& lip guard.
  • Food and liquid refreshment.

Extra equipment for extended trips:
  • Towline
  • Flares
  • Paddle float
  • Map, Compass & or GPS

Emergency Kit:

I now have completed an emergency kit for use in the bush and on sea kayaking trips. It weights 450 gms and includes a small dry bag, packed size 18x20x6cm. It contains the following:
  • Dry bag xs
  • Waterproof matches and cigarette lighter
  • Small torch and spare alkaline battery
  • Pencil, paper and xs zip lock bags
  • Firestarters
  • Small compass
  • Mirror
  • Illumstick
  • Energy food
  • Whistle
  • Emergency Survival Sleeping bag
I cannot emphasise how important this kit is on trips. If you do enough trips you will be caught out sooner or later. It has happened to me more than once and I am sorry to say I was not prepared but no longer as I have the magic kit safely tucked into my kayak and or pack now. The cost is $100.00. Contact Stanley if you are interested in purchasing a kit.

Note:

The above lists are not exhaustible and are merely a guideline of things you should consider.
Extended trips also need to consider extra supplies, shelter, clothing etc.
Receiving correct training and advice on selecting and using your equipment is equally important.
